ASHBURN, Va. Doug McDermott Jersey . - Colt McCoy received the OK from the doctor Friday to start Sunday against the New York Giants.McCoy has been dealing with a sprained neck this week, but he was a full participant in Fridays practice, getting all of the first-team snaps. He then went to see a specialist, who cleared him to play.Coach Jay Gruden had indicated that the doctors approval would be a mere formality. Gruden said McCoy threw the ball fine with no issues whatsoever at practice.McCoy sprained his neck in the fourth quarter of last weeks 24-0 loss to the St. Louis Rams. He is listed as questionable on the injury report.Robert Griffin III was pegged to start if McCoy wasnt cleared. Gruden said he took into account the total package of work from McCoy, Griffin and Kirk Cousins when making the decision and said McCoys greater body of NFL experience helped make the difference.I think his decision-making right now is probably the best, Gruden said. The Redskins have multiple injury concerns on both sides of the ball. Safety Brandon Meriweather and running back Roy Helu each have a sprained toe and have been ruled out, and linebacker Keenan Robinson (knee) also wont play.Defensive end Jason Hatcher didnt practice Friday and is questionable with a knee injury. As per the National Hockey Leagues collective bargaining agreement, Bozak must remain there for a minimum of 10 games or 24 days. The move is able to give the Maple Leafs some financial flexibility to move above the upper limit of this years salary cap and allow them to move players between the NHL club and the Toronto Marlies of the AHL, but long-term injury may not provide full relief of the players cap hit. BUFFALO, N. Chris Paul Jersey .Y. -- Pack up the pom-poms in Buffalo, because the Bills will be playing without the support of their official cheerleaders this year. Stephanie Mateczun, whose company manages the Buffalo Jills cheerleading squad, said Thursday she has suspended operations through at least the end of the season. The decision was made two days after five former Jills filed a lawsuit complaining they worked hundreds of hours for free, and were subjected to groping and sexual comments. The civil action was filed in state Supreme Court and seeks unspecified back pay and legal fees. It names Mateczuns company, Stejon Productions Corp., the Bills, and the Jills former manager, Citadel Communications Co., as defendants. Stejon took over managing the cheerleaders in 2011. Mateczun is in the process of hiring legal representation, and declined further comment. The Bills have been made aware of the Jills decision to suspend operations, but otherwise declined comment. Lawyer Frank Dolce, who represents the five cheerleaders, said the decision to suspend operations wont affect his case because it addresses past complaints. Dolce, however, did question Mateczuns motives, saying her decision to suspend the squad was unnecessary. "If they cease operations, they will blame the lawsuit for the destruction of the Jills, when that was not intended at all," Dolce said, noting there is not much money at stake in the lawsuit. "We love the Bills. We love the Jills," he said. "We do not love the travesty of its management that has occurred over the last few years." According to the Buffalo Jills Alumni website, the squad was formed in 1967, eight years after the Bills were established as founding members of the American Football League. In 1986, the Bills relinquished managing the cheerleaders to private companies. Cheerleaders have launched similar suits against the Oakland Raiders and Cincinnati Bengals. The case against the Bills claims the Jills are wrongly classified as independent contractors and subjected to policies that violate the states $8 per hour minimum wage law and other workplace rules. The Jills arent paid for games or practices and have to make 20-35 appearances, most of which are unpaid, at community and charity events each season, the lawsuit said. On top of that, they have to pay $650 for their uniforms and are not reimbursed for travel or other expenses, the cheerleaders said. All five cheerleaders said they had to take a "jiggle test" so that Mateczun, Stejons president, could assess their physiques. And Mateczun, they said, controlled everything from their hair and nail polish colour to what they could post on Facebook. The time and expense, as well as rules governing their personal lives, far exceeded what they signed on for, the women said. Dolce and his clients hope their legal action leads to policy changes within the Bills organization that ensure future cheerleaders are paid and treated better. "A decision to disband the Jills as an entity is a tremendous mistake for community spirit," Dolce said. "We do not feel bad that Stejon Productions has ceased operations. We think thats a good thing. We just hope the Bills dont trivialize the Jills because of the poor management of them." "It definitely feels good now and this summer its been good, its reacted well to everything so Im happy with that," Crosby said, referring to injections he got in the wrist. At the league and Players Associations media tour, Crosby expressed relief that he and team doctors chose not to do surgery. "It wouldnt have been too fun to deal with that, thats for sure," he said. Now a few months removed from that and feeling healthy, the 27-year-old Cole Harbour, N.S., native said he didnt know just how much the wrist injury hampered his production. "Its hard to really put a measurement on that," Crosby said. "I just probably was a little bit limited faceoff-wise sometimes and that kind of thing. (SportsNetwork. Anthony Munoz Jersey .com) - LeSean McCoy cant explain why the run game has yet to produce for the Philadelphia Eagles, so stop asking him. McCoy is the NFLs reigning rushing champion and will try to take his frustrations out Sunday when the St. Louis Rams pay a visit to Lincoln Financial Field. The Eagles were first in rushing last season with 160.4 yards per game and are now 26th with 87.0 ypg. The tremendous dropoff is related to an unhealthy offensive line and opposing defenses keying in on McCoy, who ran for 1.607 yards last season and has only 192 in four games. McCoy may be frustrated with whats going on, but is still confident in his ability and prepares the same way. Its definitely frustrating, McCoy said Wednesday. You know what type of player you are and you want to put the numbers up. If teams do come in to try and stop you and theyre successful with it, thats another frustrating thing. But then again, I know who I am. Im still confident. I know what I can do. So it doesnt really bother me that much. Were winning games, were 3-1. At times it can be frustrating, but at the end of the day I know who I am. McCoy may try to do too much at times and make things happen with his legs like he has so often in his career. But this year its been a grind. McCoy said the Eagles have won games when the run game isnt there, and that head coach Chip Kelly will display different looks and formations on Sunday against a St. Louis defense that is 30th against the rush (155.0 ypg) and has allowed a 100-yard runner in all three games. The Eagles had 22 yards rushing in Sundays 26-21 loss at San Francisco and McCoy recorded 17 on 10 carries. A 1.7 yards per carry wont get it done at this level, but the Eagles will get a boost when starting right tackle Lane Johnson returns from a four-game suspension for violating the leagues policy on performance-enhancing substances. Johnson started all 16 games as a rookie last season. Kelly said Johnson looked good in his return to the team. He obviously worked when he was away, he was down at a workout facility in Dallas and worked out there, Kelly said Tuesday. Thats the one thing you know about Lane is that hes got a great work ethic, and so we werent concerned with him coming back out of shape or whatnot. The Eagles could have stolen a victory away from the 49ers and came up short in their opportunity down the stretch. The defense and special teams played well, registering 21 points, and Niners QB Colin Kaepernick was sacked four times. The Eagles struggled in the pass rush over a 3-0 start and may have turned the corner in putting pressure up front. Safety and first-year Eagle Malcolm Jenkins has an INT in three straight games and returned one 53 yards for a touchdown Sunday. Jenkins is getting comfortable with the new system and his teammates have noticed. Hes a very smart safety, Eagles cornerback Bradley Fletcher said. He knows a lot about football, schemes, concepts, and he puts it out on the field when hes in the game. Thats great to have, especially coming from a safety whos making calls, getting guys lined up on the outside, and just being kind of the general back there in the secondary. The Eagles have forced a takeaway in 17 straight games. Jenkins will go for another pick against rested Rams rookie quarterback Austin Davis. Davis and the Rams are coming off their bye week and the undrafted Southern Miss product was named the starting QB going forward. He beat out Shaun Hill, and starter Sam Bradford is lost for the season a second straight year with a knee injury. Its a bit of a wild ride, but at the end of the day, this teams looking for me to lead them, Davis said this week. Im up for that challenge and Im excited about it. Rams head coach Jeff Fisher also talked about the move Wednesday. I also had Austin and Shaun in my office this morning at separate times, and were going to go ahead and start Austin for the remainder of the season, Fisher stated. Its not that Shaun lost the job, its that Austin earned an opportunity to keep it. St. Louis is off to a 1-2 start and had the Dallas Cowboys on the ropes in a 34-31 loss in Week 3. The Rams blew a 21-0 lead and their 448 total yards went to waste. Davis passed for 327 yards and three scores, but threw a pair of interceptions. Four of the eight pass catchers for the Rams had 50 or more yards with Jared Cook leading the way with 75 yards on seven catches. Rams wideout Tavon Austin was limited in practice with a balky knee and has not been ruled out for Sundays game. The Rams, who are unbeaten (1-0-1) after the bye under head coach Jeff Fisher, are going against an Eagles defense that ranks near the bottom of most categories such total yards allowed (391.2), passing yards (257.5), rushing (133.8) and points (26.0). Rams running back Zac Stacy is trying to become the fourth straight player with at least 70 rushing yards against the Eagles, who gave up 218 on the ground last week and 49ers tailback Frank Gore amassed 119 yards on 24 carries with a 55-yard touchdown catch. Stacy has hit the 60-yard rushing mark in each of his last two games. He ran for 67 and posted 54 receiving yards in the loss to Dallas. Philadelphia has a good chance at keeping their six-game home winning streak in the regular season intact against the Rams, who have lost three straight and four of five games to the Eagles and havent visited the City of Brotherly Love since a 38-3 loss on Sept. 7, 2008. The Rams and Eagles are tied at 19-19-1 in the all-time series. The Eagles have outscored the Rams, 69-16, in the past two encounters. WHAT TO WATCH FOR Look for Eagles QB Nick Foles to bounce back from his rough performance against the 49ers Sunday. He passed for only 195 yards with a pair of interceptions and no touchdown passes. The last time he came up empty on TD passes was Nov. 17 of last season in a win over Washington. In his past six home games in the regular season, Foles is 6-0 with 11 TD passes to just two interceptions for a 104.7 rating. Foles, who has a myriad of weapons to choose from and may want to get tight ends Brent Celek and Zach Ertz more involved, said he needs to make some adjustments moving forward. Ive definitely tried to just take some shots, stretch them out a little bit, Foles said of missing receivers long. I need to be a little more accurate, thats what Im working on this week, working on that, and staying clean in the pocket so I can deliver the ball to our guys where they can go up and make a play, not where the ball lands in front of them. And where has wide receiver Riley Cooper been? Jeremy Maclins making highlight-reel catches and Coopers still trying to live off last seasons success, which can be attributed to the presence of DeSean Jackson. Jackson is in Washington and Copper is struggling without him. Foles was sacked five times in Week 1 before going unscathed the next two weeks. He was taken down once in San Francisco. The Rams will be trying to get to Foles early and often to create turnovers and disrupt the timing he has been working on this week. That could be too much to ask because they are last in the NFL with only one sack. The lone St. Louis sack belongs to defensive tackle Aaron Donald. The Rams have 106 sacks over the past three seasons and star defensive end Robert Quinn is still searching for No. 1 this season. He led the NFC with 19.0 sacks a year ago and had his contract extended in mid-September. Last season, the Rams had five defensive linemen with five or more sacks. Rams linebacker James Laurinaitis leads the team in stops and be sure to see him on display Sunday, especially against the run. The Rams have one of the more stingy defensive backfields in the league and are allowing the third- lowest total yards against the pass (187.3). They will try to make the Eagles one-dimensional and force them to throw. However, the Redskins had that same philosophy and Philadelphia was able to circumvent the strategy. This is a good football team, Fisher said of the Eagles. This team could be 4-0. Youre talking about a team that has five returns for touchdowns already. So they played the Niners well. And weve got our hands full defensively. Great group of special teams players. And their defense is well coached. OVERALL ANALYSIS The Eagles will show some improvement up front with the return of Johnson at right tackle alongside veteran guard Todd Herremans. Its gonna be awesome to have Lane back, Eagles LT Jason Peters said. Todd goes back to his natural position. Were still missing (Jason) Kelce and (Evan) Mathis, but those other guys are gonna step in and do better this game because youve got Lane back. It makes it solid on the inside. Center David Molk and left guard Matt Tobin are the other guys Peters was referring to. McCoy surely hopes he can find some holes to run through, but even if he is limited production-wise, Foles, Sproles, Maclin and the defense will carry the Eagles to a convincing victory over the Rams. Or maybe they just caught the Tampa Bay Rays at exactly the right time. Miguel Gonzalez and two relievers combined on a six-hitter, and the Orioles capitalized on two infield singles by Adam Jones in a 3-0 victory Wednesday. Nick Markakis also had two hits for the Orioles, who outscored the Rays 10-1 in the rain-abbreviated, two-game series. Baltimore has won five of seven to reach .500 (7-7) for the first time since the second game of the season. "Its not about the hitters, its about the starting pitchers setting the tone, and we follow suit," Jones said. "In the last two games, the starters and then our bullpen comes in and shuts them down." Gonzalez (1-1) gave up three hits and three walks in five innings after entering with a 9.64 ERA. Zach Britton permitted two singles over three innings to keep his ERA at 0.00, and Tommy Hunter got three outs for his fourth save. The Rays came up empty against the third and fourth pitchers in the Baltimore rotation. After Wei-Yin Chen excelled on Monday, Gonzalez righted himself at the expense of the struggling Tampa Bay lineup. Wil Myers struck out three times, and the Rays got only one extra-base hit. Tampa Bay has scored only 14 runs in its last nine games and has been held under three runs in nine of 15 games this season, including three shutouts. "We faced 153 pitches today and didnt score a run. Thats difficult to do," manager Joe Maddon said. "Our at bats have been good; the results havent been." Myers, who is batting .200, said, "Were not getting it done with the bats. Especially me. I havent done too much at the plate." Tampa Bays biggest threat came in the seventh, when a walk and singles by Yunel Escobar and Jose Molina loaded the bases against Britton with one out. Ben Zobrist hit into a force play at the plate, and Myers struck out. "I had a chance to make something happen and couldnt get the big hit," Myers said. "Thats been the frustrating thing, not getting the hit to help the team." Tampa Bay starter Jake Odorizzi (1-2) alloowed three runs and five hits in five innings. Mark Jackson Jersey. "Sometimes youve just got to be able to use your legs," Jones said. "Youre not always going to be able to swing the bat to the best of your ability or the way you would like to. So in certain situations its smart to drop a bunt down and get your timing back." Both starting pitchers dominated until the fourth inning. In the top half, the Rays got runners on first and second with one out before David DeJesus hit a sinking liner to right. Markakis caught the ball and threw to second for a double play. In the bottom half, Baltimore used a walk and two singles to load the bases with no outs. After Matt Wieters delivered a fly ball to the warning track that advanced all three runners, J.J. Hardy hit a run-scoring grounder for a 2-0 lead. Baltimore loaded the bases with two outs in the fifth before Jones hit a dribbler down the line that stopped on the chalk. Mark Giordano lit the lamp for the Flames, who have lost seven straight games. Jonas Hiller played well in defeat, making 19 saves. Calgarys first goal of the night came with 1:15 left before the second intermission as Giordano collected a clearing attempt along the left-wing boards, fired away from the blue line and beat Lehtonen with a floater. Theres always people that are coming in and they want to steal your job, they want your spot, they want to be in the lineup.Early in the season for Toronto Maple Leafs, Stuart Percy has been that job-stealer. The first defenceman in franchise history to put up a point in each of his first three games in the league, Percy has at least temporarily taken Jake Gardiners spot in the lineup. Its just how it goes, said Gardiner, who was a healthy scratch for a second straight game Tuesday night against the Colorado Avalanche. Its a business. If someones playing really well or youre not playing your game, youre not going to play.In the process, Percy has given the coaching staff a good problem to have with seven defencemen vying for six spots. In his fourth career game, the 21-year-old was second on the Leafs in ice time with a steady 23:34.Weve said right from the beginning that were going to create competition for positions, coach Randy Carlyle said. If they compete for the position and they earn it, its a novel concept.Percy was a first-round pick in 2011, so his growth into an NHL player shouldnt be a surprise. But he entered training camp staring at three veteran left-handed defencemen firmly ahead of him and Henrik Tallinder with the Leafs on a tryout as the favourite to make it as the No. 7.A shoulder injury to Tallinder and a knee injury to righty Cody Franson opened the gate for Percy to show what he could do. So far, so good. The poise that he has with the puck, the decision-making, he always seems to make that good decision, hold onto the puck when its time, move when its time, Robidas said. Hes very reliable defensively, very good stick, always in good position. Hes been very effective on the power play, as well, and played against some really good players.Carlyle praised Percy for reading where the forecheck is coming from, exiting the zone with one pass and making the right pass in all zones on a consistent basis.Percy, a native of nearby Oakville, Ont., said he takes pride in playing a 200-foot game. His offensive skills were never a question, according to Carlyle, just Percys ability to adapt to this level after one full season in the American Hockey League.Percy showed a flash of being ready in Torontos season opener, when he assisted on a Tyler Bozak power-play goal with a perfect setup from below the goal-line.MMaybe I didnt expect (to adapt this quickly), but I definitely strived for it, Percy said. Mike Piazza Jersey. Im just playing my usual game. Its how Ive played most of my career. Just sticking to it, keep things simple, be assertive out there and always have your head moving.Carlyle, who enjoyed a 17-year career as a defenceman, knows that the position comes with a steep learning curve. Playing more games with less practice time and at a quicker pace can go against young players, he said. With that in mind, Percy is taking to heart some advice he got from another former NHL defenceman, Steve Staios, whos now in player development for the Leafs. For me just to keep my foot on the gas and dont let up, Percy said. Just to keep playing hard and practising hard every day and working as hard as I can to stay here every day.Percys ability to stick beyond a game or two came at the expense of Gardiner, who hasnt played since Saturday night against the Pittsburgh Penguins. Well removed from his shuttling back and forth between the Leafs and AHLs Toronto Marlies, Gardiner signed a US$20.25-million, five-year contract in the off-season, but that didnt keep him from sitting in the press box two games in a row. This happens, Gardiner said Tuesday morning. Its happened to me a few times before and it happens to everybody. You cant play great all the time. Just rebound the next time I get an opportunity.Gardiner said he has watched a couple of video clips and believes he has to tighten some things up defensively.Carlyle said Gardiner simply needs to play better. We feel that we have a quality hockey player that can play to a higher level, and he agrees with that, Carlyle said.Meanwhile, Percy is playing at perhaps as high a level as can be expected for someone with three games of NHL experience. But with what Carlyle called a comfort zone as far as on-ice instincts, Percy has shown evidence he can stick around for some time.We understand theres going to be valleys and theres going to be hiccups along the way, Carlyle said. But I dont think thats any different than any of our other young defencemen.Percy has simply been better than the Leafs other young defencemen, Gardiner and second-year player Morgan Rielly. All three are lefties, and with captain Dion Phaneuf on that side now there isnt room for all of them at once.We have a healthy, I guess, competition to stay in the lineup and thats always good for the team knowing that the teams going to get everybodys best efforts, Percy said.___Follow @SWhyno on Twitter Cheap NFL JerseysWholesale JerseysWholesale NFL JerseysJerseys From ChinaWholesale NFL JerseysCheap NFL JerseysCheap Jerseys ' ' '
MARANELLO, Italy -- Kimi Raikkonen will return to Ferrari as a replacement for Felipe Massa, giving the Formula One team a new partner for Fernando Alonso and two top drivers for next season. Paul Konerko Jersey . "Scuderia Ferrari announces that it has reached an agreement with Kimi Raikkonen," the team said Wednesday in a statement. "The Finn will join Fernando Alonso in the driver line-up for the next two racing seasons." The expected move came a day after Massa announced he will leave Ferrari following the seven final races of this season. The 33-year-old Raikkonen, who currently drives for Lotus, had been heavily linked with a return to Ferrari. The Finn raced for Ferrari from 2007-09, and his title in 2007 was the last time Ferrari won the drivers championship. "Im really pleased to return to Maranello after having experienced three fantastic years there," Raikkonen said on Ferraris website. "I have lots of memories that tie me to Ferrari, which Ive always carried with me. I cant wait to work with Fernando, an extraordinary driver, to bring the team the success it deserves." Alonso and Raikkonen have won three Formula One titles and 52 races between them. Ferrari apparently wanted to strengthen its lineup for 2014, when the F1 regulations change dramatically with the introduction of new 1.6-litre V6 turbo engines. Raikkonen has one win and five second-place finishes this season and is known as one of the most consistent drivers in the sport. His retirement in Belgium last month ended a run of 27 consecutive races in the points, and it was his first DNF in 39 races. "Im delighted to welcome Kimi back to the Scuderia with which he won the world title," Ferrari team principal Stefano Domenicali said. "He sounded extremely happy to return to Maranello and very determined to approach the job that awaits him in the best way possible." Massa won 11 races in his first three seasons with Ferrari but he hasnt been the same driver since a life-threatening accident at the Hungarian Grand Prix in 2009. His contract is up at the end of this season. "Felipe always carried himself as a real team man and together we lived through beautiful and dramatic moments, which created a really special human and professional relationship," Domenicali said. "Hell always be part of our family and we wish him well for his future." In the current standings, Alonso is second to Red Bull driver Sebastian Vettel, Raikkonen is fourth and Massa is seventh. Of Raikkonens 20 career F1 wins, nine came during his three seasons with Ferrari. He won the 2007 championship, the only drivers title of his career, by one point ahead of Lewis Hamilton and Alonso, who was then with McLaren. However, near the end of the 2009 season, Ferrari announced that Raikkonen was leaving the team even though his contract lasted through 2010. He was replaced by Alonso. The announcement of Raikkonens return comes during turbulent times at Ferrari, which this season has again been unable to stop Red Bulls dominance. During last weekends Italian GP, Alonso and Ferrari were again forced to downplay talk of a rift after the Spanish driver lost his temper with team officials during qualifying. It remains to be seen if Alonso will also leave or duel for the teams top driver status with Raikkonen next season. If Alonso does stay, it will mark the first time Ferrari has two former world champion drivers since Alain Prost and Nigel Mansell were at the wheels of the red cars in 1990. "I want to welcome my new teammate," Alonso said on Ferraris website. "Together well have to approach a difficult technical and sporting challenge starting next year." Jose Abreu Jersey . The Braves werent buying it. Fernandez matched his career high with 14 strikeouts in eight innings and combined with Steve Cishek on a three-hitter as the Miami Marlins shut out Atlanta 1-0 on Tuesday night. "He pitched amazing," said Atlantas Chris Johnson. "We went up against a buzz-saw today." Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez said his hitters "were coming back shaking their heads." Fernandez (3-1) outpitched Atlantas Alex Wood (2-3), who also was dominant. Wood allowed four hits and one run with no walks and a career-high 11 strikeouts in eight innings. But the night belonged to Fernandez. "I think it would be fair to say that was probably his best-pitched game as far as his stuff and his command," said Marlins manager Mike Redmond. Fernandez struck out the side in the fourth and fifth innings. He allowed three hits with no walks but said he didnt have that kind of control in the bullpen before the game. "My breaking ball in the bullpen was horrible, horrible," Fernandez said. "But I thought to myself that when they say play ball it gets better." Fernandez said catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia deserved credit for the way he helped keep Atlantas batters off-balance. "He was just amazing back there," Fernandez said. "I cant explain how good he was." Gonzalez said Fernandez, 21, has more dominant games in his future. "Hes got the capability of running those type of games out every time he goes out," Gonzalez said. When told he was receiving postgame compliments in the Braves clubhouse, Fernandez shrugged and said "That was a lucky game today, I think." The Marlins gave Fernandez the only run he would need in the fourth. Giancarlo Stanton hit a one-out double to left field and scored on Casey McGehees single up the middle. Jason Heyward led off the first with a single to left field, and the Braves didnt have another hit until Chris Johnsonss leadoff single in the eighth. Joe Crede Jersey. Fernandez then struck out Dan Uggla and Evan Gattis before Andrelton Simmons infield single moved pinch-runner Tyler Pastornicky to second. Pinch-hitter Ryan Doumit grounded out to Fernandez to end the eighth. The eight innings matched Fernandezs career high. He was at 109 pitches after the eighth, so Redmond said it was an easier call to bring in Cishek for the ninth. "I think he did his job," Redmond said of Fernandez. "The agonizing would have been had he been around 100 pitches. After the runners got on in the eighth, I knew that was going to be an easier decision." Cishek pitched a perfect ninth for his fourth save. Atlantas only other baserunner before the eighth came when B.J. Upton reached on McGehees fielding error at third base in the fourth. Fernandez then struck out the next two batters to end the inning. It was the second straight start Fernandez did not allow an earned run. He allowed three unearned runs and received no decision in the Marlins 6-3 loss to Washington on April 16. Fernandez set his career high with 14 strikeouts against Cleveland on Aug. 2, 2013. Woods previous high was nine strikeouts against Washington on Aug. 16, 2013. Wood lowered his ERA from 1.67 to 1.54 in the loss. The game lasted only 2 hours, 8 minutes. Louis Blues, having added Ryan Miller and Steve Ott from Buffalo, remain the No.When the Carolina Hurricanes went into the 2002 playoffs, they didnt necessarily think they were Stanley Cup contenders. Then Paul Maurice worked his magic behind the bench. "We could feel it within our room, we could feel it on our bench, we could feel it on our plane" former Carolina goaltender Kevin Weekes said. "And we knew that we were a prepared group, we knew that we were a committed group, we knew we were a group that believed, and Coach Maurice went a long way in creating that atmosphere." Maurice got that group to the Cup final as part of an impressive tenure in Carolina. Almost 12 years after that run, Maurice on Sunday replaced Claude Noel as coach of the Winnipeg Jets, and a handful of his former Hurricanes players consider it a good fit based on what he did for them. "I think hes a very underrated coach," said Hall of Famer and former Carolina captain Ron Francis, who also worked as an assistant under Maurice. "Hes a very bright guy, hes good at assessing the talent he has and then structuring the system that he believes will get the most out of the lineup that he has on a game-in, game-out basis." Maurice has his fair share of issues to deal with to fix what ails the Jets, who are 10 points out of the Western Conferences final playoff spot after losing five in a row. "I would imagine the strategy for him, hed be a little bit of a detective going in there," said Jeff ONeill who played for Maurice in Carolina and Toronto. "Hes going to find out what the problems are and hes going to address the issues. And thats probably the first order of business." Its not exactly new business, either. When Maurice became Whalers coach early in the 1995-96 season, he inherited a Hartford team that missed the playoffs in each of the past three years. The Jets missed the playoffs in their first two seasons in Winnipeg and havent made it since 2006-07 as the Atlanta Thrashers. At least its a familiar challenge for Maurice. "It almost works in his favour that this is not a new situation for him," said former defenceman Aaron Ward. "Hes never really walked into a situation where hes had a cupboard full of unbelievable talent." Winnipeg doesnt have unbelievable talent, but theres a core in place beginning with captain Andrew Ladd, U.S. Olympian Blake Wheeler, Evander Kane and Dustin Byfuglien. Those early Whalers teams were led by Geoff Sanderson, Andrew Cassels and Keith Primeau. Maurice didnt turn things around right away, but by the second season of the Hurricanes after the move to North Carolina, they were in the playoffs thanks to contributions from Primeau, Sami Kapanen, Francis and goaltender Arturs Irbe. The 2002 run to the Cup final was Maurices most memorable achievement, taking an unheralded group led by Francis and Rod BrindAmour to within three victories of knocking off the talent-rich Detroit Red Wings. Even today, Francis wondered what wouldve happened if Carolina didnt lost Game 3 in triple overtime. "I think he just had the guys believing that we were capable of doing it," said Francis, whos now vice president of hockey operations for the Hurricanes. "We kept everything sort of simple and the focus on the direction it needed to be kept on, and as a result you had a team that believes in itself, believes in each other and some may say overachieved, but not according to the guys in that locker room or the coaching staff. We certainly believed we belonged right to the end." Maurice isnt the same man he was when he got his first NHL head-coaching job at the age of 28 or even the same from 2002. Maurice has coached 1,084 games with the Whalers, Hurricanes and Toronto Maple Leafs and isnt a fresh-faced youngster anymore. "Obviously he knows what works and wwhat doesnt work now," ONeill said. Gerald McCoy Jersey. "I think maybe when he was younger he thought he had to be a hard ass all the time for guys to kind of buy in and believe it, and then later on the message didnt have to be that because he was established, he had coached so many games." Maurice is 46 now, armed with experience from coaching Metallurg in Russias Kontinental Hockey League and doing some television analysis. Francis worked on Maurices staff in 2009-10 and 2010-11 and saw how he matured and changed over time. Francis has no doubt Maurice has adjusted with a changing league. "Hes very bright, hes a good student of the game and hes watching whats happening and how things are evolving," Francis said. "He incorporates that into his game plan and his systems. Theres no question he doesnt get stuck on one particular thing but more or less moves with the times." Times now are about youth, as Weekes pointed out the NHL has never been younger. Maurice will be charged with figuring out how to best use defenceman Jacob Trouba, centre Mark Scheifele and others in the pipeline in Winnipeg. Based on what Maurice did at the junior level, including winning the 1995 OHL title with the Detroit Jr. Red Wings, and how much he accomplished with the Hurricanes, his former players know where his strengths lie. Most notably, he can maximize the talent at his disposal. "Its one thing to coach somebody up, its another thing to just coach and its another thing to coach somebody down," Weekes said. "Paul Maurice is somebody that Ive seen, and one of the few that Ive seen as a head coach in my time, that coached you up." If the Jets hope to make up a substantial deficit to get back into contention this season or at least make strides for the future, itll be up to Maurice to coach up like he did in Carolina. That job starts with creating an identity for a team that has been lacking one. Those Hurricanes teams are a nice blue print. "I think its a team that works extremely hard," Francis said. "I think its a team that tries to be very solid in its own end and then try to get in on the forecheck as quickly and as aggressively as possible. Those are some of the trademarks that he really liked to incorporate into his team." Personal relationships also are a trademark of Maurices coaching. Weekes said Maurice knew how to treat players as players and as people, and Francis lauded his "open-door policy," which could benefit Ladd. "At any point as a captain, if I wanted to walk in and have a conversation with him, I felt comfortable doing that," Francis said. "We could talk about everything from my individual game to team concepts and systems or strengths and weaknesses and how to adjust things. And it was no different being a part of the coaching staff. He gave everybody a voice. Youre allowed to kind of say your piece and what you thought, and at the end of the day it was his job as head coach to make the final decision. But he certainly gave you that opportunity to express what you felt." Maurice certainly hasnt been perfect. During his 13 full seasons as an NHL head coach, his teams made the playoffs five times and missed eight. But Weekes, who was part of just one Maurice-led playoff team, praised him as "hands-down" the best coach he ever played for. "He set the right tone with the staff, certainly with all of our players, and for the most part youd have to say he put all of us in a position to succeed," Weekes said. "Everything was structured, our work ethic as a team was through the roof, and I think that really reflected our coaches, starting with Coach Maurice, just in terms of the preparation, the practice detail, the tempo -- us doing all the little things that it took the be successful." SAN MARTIN, Calif. Mike Hull Jersey . -- Brooks Koepka knows what its like to hold the lead going into the final round. And he knows what its like to win. Just not in America. Playing the PGA Tour behind stops in Scotland and Shanghai, Koepka gave himself a great chance at yet another detour in his around-the-world journey this year. He had a 4-under 67 on Saturday in the Frys.com Open for a two-shot lead over George McNeil and Jason Kokrak going into the final round at CordeValle. Koepka has won in Spain and Portugal, Italy and Scotland. The 23-year-old Floridian started the year with no status on any tour, and since then has earned membership on the Challenge Tour and European Tour. A victory Sunday would give him a two-year exemption on the PGA Tour and keep him from having to reload the pages in his passport. "Feels the same," he said. "Its all how much pressure you put on yourself. Obviously, I think there may be some people that dont think I can handle it on Sunday, just for the fact that Ive never been sitting in this position. Just got to take it as it comes and just be relaxed about it. Im pretty chill, so nothing really bothers me." A warm afternoon ideal for scoring could have unsettled him. Kokrak holed out for eagle from 129 yards in the first fairway. Koepka rolled in a 15-foot birdie putt. Robert Garrigus dropped a shot into 4 feet on the second hole. Koepka matched him with an 18-foot birdie. He wound up at 15-under 198, one round away from earning membership on three tours in one year -- not to mention a trip to the Masters. "The Challenge Tour prepared me pretty well," Koepka said. "Learning how to win is a big deal." McNeill made 10 birdies in his round of 62 that put him in the last group with Koepka. McNeill is a two-time winner on the PGA Tour. He has never played in the Masters because both wins were opposite-field events that didnt award full FedEx Cup points. "Im going for the record to win the most times without qualifying," McNeill said. Thats no longer the case. The Frys.com Open is the first event on the 2013-14 PGA Tour schedule, which has gone to a wraparound season for the first time in history. Its the start of the FedEx Cup season, offering full points, meaning the winner goes to Augusta National. Brantford, Ont., native David Hearn shot a 6 under and finished the day tied for 30th place, while Mike Weir of Brights Grove, Ont., shot a 2 under for a share of 60th place. Kokrak nearly ended his day the way it started when his wedge spun back toward the hole. He settled for a short birdie putt and a 68 that put him in the last group with Koepka and McNeill. Jimmy Walker also had a 62 and was three shots behind with Robert Garrigus (68) and Vijay Singh, the 50-year-old Fijian making his first PGA Tour start in nearly two months. Singh hit driver on the par-4 17th hole up the back of the green, back down the slope to about 2 feet for an eagle. That carried him to a 65. Singh last season failed to finish in the top 125 on the money list for the first time in his career. He missed the cut in six of his last 11 tournaments since filing a lawsuit against the PGA Tour for the way it investigated his admission that he used deer antler spray, which was said to contain a banned substance. Ryo Ishikawa also holed out from the fairway at No. 10 and had a 67. He was among those five shots behind, still in the mix but needing something low to have any chance the way the leaders are playing. "I dont think you can play overly aggressive," Koepka said. "You cant play not to lose, either. Its conservatively aggressive." Whatever its called, it worked. The average score was 68.8, and Koepka had one of the 24 rounds at 67 or better. Only six players were over par, led by Camilo Villegas with a 77 that dropped him out of contention. It could have been worse for the Colombian. He tried playing a shot from the water in front of the ninth green, and the ball hit off the bank and nearly struck him. Koepka had no such trouble. He made bogeys on the sixth and 14th hole, but otherwise was giving himself plenty of looks at birdie. He said he has won all his Challenge Tour events from the lead. Koepka will be paired with McNeil, a pair of Florida State alums. It was last year when McNeill called Koepka to answer any questions he had about qualifying for the U.S. Open. "We just had a nice talk," McNeill said. "Honestly, Ive never met him. Never seen him in person. I would like to." And he will, in the final round of the first PGA Tour event of the season with plenty at stake. DIVOTS: Because 81 players made the cut, there was a 54-hole cut. Kemps line shot into the Arizona bullpen down the left field line put the Dodgers up 1-0 in the second. Gordon walked to start the fourth, then stole second and third. Yasiel Puig walked and Hanley Ramirez bounced one high off the plate to Cahill, beating the throw to first for an infield RBI single. With new regulations and preseason testing already difficult, Red Bull has the added stress of whether Daniel Ricciardo has what it takes to drive alongside Sebastian Vettel. Adam Shaheen Womens Jersey . Although Vettels relationship with Mark Webber was often difficult, Webber was a driver who guaranteed a healthy haul of points and his retirement from Formula One has left Red Bull with a void to fill. "It is a huge opportunity and privilege to work alongside a four-time world champion in Sebastian," Ricciardo said. "I am really looking forward to it." With the constructors title to defend, Red Bull needs Ricciardo to perform consistently well. "I would love to be as competitive as soon as possible," he said. "After some time, hopefully not too long, I want the team to know that I am capable of getting some top results." This is even more the case given how their rivals are shaping up. Ferrari boasts two world champions -- Fernando Alonso and Kimi Raikkonen -- and the Mercedes pair of Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg will have gained confidence from last season, winning three races and securing eight pole positions between them and challenging Red Bull for pure speed. Replacing one Australian driver with another makes for a nice symmetry, but the gulf between Ricciardo and Webber remains huge. Webber won nine GPs and finished third three times in the championship race, while the 24-year-old Ricciardo is in his third season and his best race finish is seventh. Rivals will hope that a slow start from Ricciardo will impact on Red Bulls confidence and unsettle Vettel over the course of the season. A strong start on his home track in Melbourne could be just the early boost Ricciardo needs to silence the doubters. "I wont need much psyching up, Melbourne will take care of that. Being the sole Australian I am sure there will be a lot of attention," Ricciardo said. "People talk about pressure, but for me it is exciting, the adrenaline will be pumping." How Ricciardo fares in qualifying could also play a factor in how well Vettel does. Red Bull has been consistent in qualifying over the years, often leading races from 1-2 on the grid and making it more difficult for opponents to get to Vettel. But if Ricciardo is qualifying lower down the grid, this could leave Vettel more exposed to attack. The problems experienced in preseason testing offer further encouragement to Red Bulls rivals. "Were definitely not up to scratch with where wed like to be," Ricciardo said during the final preseason testing in Bahrain recently. "Its clear we probably wont come out to Melbourne and dominate as the team did last year." Tennis Australia chief executive Craig Tiley told local media in comments published Wednesday that John Tomic would not be allowed into Melbourne Park in any official capacity or as a spectator.A junior hockey player who died suddenly at a training camp this week was a large but gentle boy who had recently started to show academic promise, his former principal said Tuesday. Paul Kitchen, head of school at Rothesay Netherwood in New Brunswick, said staff and students have been hit hard by the death of Jordan Boyd. The 16-year-old boy died Monday after collapsing during a skating drill at tryouts for the Acadie-Bathurst Titan of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League. Kitchen said the 270-student private school in Rothesay is reaching out to offer support to Boyds parents, who had been thrilled by their sons academic progress. "Jordan is a fine, fine young man who worked hard at his academics, who worked hard at his relationship with others," Kitchen said in an interview. "He was ... this gentle, gentle large boy with this smile on his face." The league said a physical therapist provided CPR after Boyd fell on the ice, lost consciousness and stopped breathing at a rink in Bathurst, N.B. Results from an autopsy are expected later this week. Kitchen said Boyds hockey skills blossomed during the 2012-13 academic year when his team won silver at the World Sport School Championships in Calgary. He recalled hed often meet the Grade 10 student hurrying between the dormitory and the rink for additional ice time, where the youung man honed his skating and scoring skills. Doug Gilmour Jersey. Boyd was improving his grades and coming to understand the importance of academic excellence, said Kitchen. He said the death of the six-foot, 176-pound youth has left staff and students struggling to understand how a person who appeared so physically strong would suddenly collapse. "Hes been taken from us and it doesnt make sense to any of us," he said. Photi Sotiropoulos, a spokesman for the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League, said its too early to speculate on what lessons -- if any -- can be learned from the death. He said the league will examine the autopsy results carefully and consider if improvements to medical evaluations can be made. Sotiropoulos noted there has been one prior, similar death in 1978, when 17-year-old Daniel Richard of the Quebec Remparts collapsed and died during a practice after suffering a heart attack. A media report at the time said the teams medical doctor said Richard suffered from a rare congenital condition that can bring about the shrinking of an artery from the heart. The doctor said the death could have occurred at any time in the youths life. Kitchen said he hopes the cause of Boyds death is established soon. "Anything we can ever do to prevent this kind of tragedy from happening for one other family is crucial." The deal was announced before Wednesdays game against Cincinnati. It had been in the works since before general manager Josh Byrnes was fired on June 22 and it came together in the last few days. Smith will make $6 million in 2015 and $6.75 million in 2016. The Padres hold a $7 million option in 2017, or a $250,000 buyout. Smith is making $4.5 million this year. He was obtained in an off-season trade with Oakland. The Padres started the day in third place in the NL West at 37-47, 10 1/2 games behind San Francisco. The Padres havent had a winning season since 2010, when they won 90 games and still missed the playoffs. Since then San Diego has had seasons with 91, 86 and 86 losses. "Ownerships committed to winning and thats what Im all about. That was my first question: Are we going to try to win and try to win now? And the answer was. Yes. So I was like, Im in. Assistant GM A.J. Hinch said talks were "tricky" because of Byrnes firing, but added that Smiths desire to stay with San Diego and ownerships commitment helped overcome that. The Mariners shortstop felt even better after adding an RBI single two innings later. Making a rare start after interim manager Robby Thompson shuffled his lineup due to an injury to second baseman Nick Franklin, Ryan had two hits and drove in three runs to snap a 9-for-77 stretch, and the Seattle Mariners beat the Oakland Athletics 5-3 on Wednesday. "The frustration mounts ... when the at-bats are limited because you have so much time to sit and think about it," said Ryan, who went into the game hitting .190. "This is the role Ive carved out for myself. All I can try to do is the best I can in the opportunities Im getting." Ryan struck out in his first two at-bats before doubling off Oakland starter A.J. Griffin (10-9) with two outs in the sixth. He hit a two-out, 0-2 pitch sharply down the third base line that glanced off the glove of Oaklands Josh Donaldson and ricocheted into the As bullpen. Kendrys Morales scored and Dustin Ackley barely beat the relay throw home despite colliding with As catcher Stephen Vogt to put the Mariners up 4-3. Vogt slammed the back of his head on the ground during the play and remained down briefly before staying in the game. "I thought at the time I got him," Vogt said. "It was an unfortunate play in our direction." Michael Morse and Brad Miller homered for Seattle, which overcame an uneven start by Hisashi Iwakuma to beat the As for the fourth time in the past five games between the division rivals. Iwakuma (12-6) gave up a pair of home runs and pitched with runners in scoring position most of the afternoon, but limited the damage to win his second straight. The Mariners right-hander struck out four and walked two in seven innings. "As I got deeper into my game I was able to command my pitches lower in the zone," Iwakuma said. "Even with runners on second and third, I was able to keep the ball down and pitch effectively. Thats part of my game and Im able to execuute with runners on. Dennis Smith Jersey. " Coco Crisp and Brandon Moss hit home runs for Oakland, which fell to 15-16 since the All-Star break. The As stranded three runners at third, one at second and had another runner get thrown out at the plate. They also wasted a 3-1 lead one day after blowing a four-run lead in a 7-4 loss to the Mariners. That was enough to anger Oakland manager Bob Melvin. "Everything that we did today is whats wrong with us," Melvin said. "We didnt add on early, we didnt make big pitches when we had to, we didnt come through in situational at-bats. Ugly, ugly game for us and its been going on for a while. It comes to a point where you just have to step up." Iwakuma wasnt nearly as crisp as he was in his previous start against Texas, but did make it hold up. He got Alberto Callaspo to fly out with a runner at third to end the sixth, then retired two straight to end the seventh after Oakland got runners on first and third. Charlie Furbush and Yoervis Medina worked the eighth while Dannny Farquhar struck out the side in the ninth for his ninth save. Crisp homered leading off the bottom of the first and Moss hit his 20th of the season in the fourth. Callaspo added a sacrifice fly to give the As a 3-1 lead. Seattle, which overcame a 4-0 deficit to beat Oakland 7-4 on Tuesday, came back again. Morse hit a towering home run off Griffin in the second and Miller added a leadoff shot in the fifth. After the Mariners scored twice in the sixth to take the lead, Ryans RBI single off Dan Otero in the eighth made it 5-3. Griffin struck out seven, but continued to have issues with his control. He walked four, giving him 15 over his past three starts. LONDON -- England secured its place in a three-way fight for the Six Nations title next weekend by blowing away Wales in a 29-18 win at Twickenham on Sunday, delivering a potent mix of clinical finishing, flawless place-kicking and non-stop intensity to capture the Triple Crown. Carl Lawson Jersey . Welsh hopes of landing an unprecedented third straight championship outright were ended thanks to first-half tries by Danny Care and Luther Burrell and seven successful kicks - five penalties and two conversions from flyhalf Owen Farrell. England banished the painful memories of a 30-3 loss to Wales in last seasons Six Nations title decider by dominating almost every facet of a game played at a searing pace. The visitors scrum was demolished, their tackling and handling was sloppy and they only stayed in contention because of fullback Leigh Halfpennys own blemish-free record of six penalties. "Weve tried to remove the fear of playing, and when youve got the courage of your convictions, it generally pays off," England coach Stuart Lancaster said. "Its nice to put last years result in Cardiff to bed. We lost fair and square on that day, but today was our day." England joined France and Ireland on six points from four matches, setting up a thrilling last round of matches. Owning a far superior points difference of +81, Ireland will win the title - and seal a perfect international sendoff for retiring centre Brian ODriscoll with a victory over the French in Paris in the last of the three games. England simply has to beat Italy in Rome, which should be a given on this performance, and hope Ireland lose. If that happens, Lancasters side should lift the trophy for only the second time since winning the World Cup in 2003. The English just keep raising the bar under Lancaster, who has changed the teams mentality and approach in his two years in charge. He claimed that the toughed-out 13-10 win over Ireland two weeks ago was the highlight of a reign that includes a record victory over New Zealand, but this success will take some beating. It clinched the Triple Crown - a sweep of wins over the home unions for the first time since 2003 and was the perfect answer to a midweek taunt from Wales coach Warren Gatland - who challenged whether the English had turned from boys to men in the last 12 months. This Wales side contained 12 players that featured in the British Lions series-clinching win in the third test against Australia last July. Wales had more than double the amount of caps as England here. "We didnt keep the ball well enough today, there were too many turnovers and we were hammered at the scrum very disappointing," Gatland said. A bad day for the Welsh became even worse with the news that Halfpenny will miss the rest of this season after dislocating his right shoulder toward the end of the match. On a red-hot day in southwest London, England brought a scorching intensity that the Welsh couldnt live with. At scrumhalf, Care was the conductor-in-chief and from one of his trademark quick taps, England went in front after just five minutes. Care noticed Wales defenders had turned their backs after referee Romain Poite awarded a penalty following a long advantage, and Care darted past Poite and into a gap to dive over the line. It was Englands first try against Wales in 282 minutes. Wales often had no answer to its opponents line breaks and hard running, but with the adrenalin flowing England gave away some soft penalties at the fiercely contested breakdown that Halfpenny punished in the ninth, 23rd and 31st minutes. Two of those came from near halfway. With Farrell booting two penalties of his own, England held a 13-9 lead just after the half hour but that lead turned to 11 points when Wales over-threw a lineout and the ball was recycled out to the English left wing, where Jonny May cut inside. Play was set up for Billy Twelvetrees to slither a grubber kick into the left corner where Burrell collected on the dive for a try, converted from out wide. England was much the better side yet two more well-struck penalties by Halfpenny in the final three minutes saw Wales somehow jog back to the dressing rooms just five points behind. However, Welsh errors - both handling and tactical, continued after halftime and Farrell was unforgiving from the kicking tee. England was never in danger of blowing its lead. "We grew a lot as a team over the last year," England lock Courtney Lawes said, "and a performance like that has been a long time coming." Josh Shaw Jersey . It took years. Now the 29-year-old, whose heated battle with Mary Spencer for a spot on the Olympic team was chronicled in the documentary Last Woman Standing, is gunning for gold at the Commonwealth Games. Those three years (from Olympic qualifying until now) were really hard, Ive got to say. For sure they were hard, Fortin said. But I feel like its shown me I have mental toughness that I didnt even know I have.I was not always strong and on top of things. Im really proud of what I went through because it really made me better and stronger. The St. Nicholas, Que., native will step into the ring Tuesday against Phathiswa Thingana of South Africa.Fortin and Spencer have been two of Canadas finest female boxers for years — Fortin is a two-time world champion while Spencer has won three world titles. They were also great friends. So it was a bittersweet moment when the International Olympic Committee announced it was adding womens boxing to the schedule for the London Olympics, but only three of the eight weight classes would be contested.Fortin and Spencer were forced to move up to the same weight class — 75 kilos — and the friends became fierce foes.Spencer beat Fortin for the spot on the Olympic team, and was touted as one of Canadas gold-medal favourites in London. But once there, she lost her first bout and was eliminated.Fortin lost her Own The Podium funding. There are shots of a forlorn Fortin working out alone in her Quebec gym in Last Woman Standing.Months went by before she could bring herself to watch footage of boxers in her weight class competing in London.I dont remember when it was but it was a few months after that I sat in my living room and watched the whole thing, Fortin said. It was kind of emotional, intense. But I needed to do that, and now its past me. Without a spot on the national team, though, the few fights Fortin has had over the last three years shes arranged herself. Then Fortin defeated Spencer twice to earn a spot on the Commonwealth Games team. Her confidence grew at a recent international tournament in Poland, where she won three of her four fights.I didnt know where I was internationally, what level, Fortin said. And this tournament, it really gave me confidence, it really showed me that I was at that level, and those three years that we spent at home, we didnt just spend them waiting for nationals. We really trained hard and really believed that we could beat Mary. Its funny but Ive had some comments about my fights ... people who knew me before, and said, Wow youve improved a lot. Canadian coach Daniel Trepanier said hes seen the growth in Fortin, who arrived at the Games with just 15 losses in 130 bouts. For sure not making the Olympics in 2012, seeing Mary go to London, made her stronger, it gave her more will to go further, said Trepanier. He wasnt surprised the seven-time Canadian champion decided to stick at it, resetting her sights on Rio, rather than retiring. Its every athletes dream to go the Olympics, Trepanier said. And right now, shes in the drivers seat. Shes now one of the top athletes in the world.Fortin and Trepanier hope the IOC will eventually increase the number of womens weight classes at Olympics, but it wont happen before Rio.Thats what it is for now, Fortin said. Marys still boxing. Of course Im going to face her again at nationals. Nationals is going to be a hard tournament in 2015.I know its not going to be given to me. Now that Ive passed the national level, now Ive beaten Mary ... Ive still got to work. This is just the beginning and I have to be very conscious of that.Mandy Bujold is Canadas other female boxer in Glasgow. TSNs Jack Armstrong offers his thoughts on the Christmas Day extravaganza, including the Nets struggles, the improvement of Serge Ibaka, the feisty Mario Chalmers, the performance of Chandler Parsons and the lane presence of DeAndre Jordan. Dallas Mavericks Jerseys . 1. BROOKLYN NETS: I know Brook Lopez is a good player but come on now. The Chicago Bulls didnt have Derrick Rose and Luol Deng wasnt suited up and they get their tails kicked at home. What I see is a team thats disjointed and just not on the same page in terms of what the plan is. Injuries and the lack of practice time with a healthy group have been factors no doubt but when I see inconsistent effort and lack of fire/passion, then I wonder. I think we all thought this team would be so much better. Now what? Tough decision for GM Billy King. Theyve gone all in with this group and it will be a difficult fix. 2. Hes continuing to improve his game and has become a very nice third piece to compliment Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook. Plays the game very hard. Relentless in his rebounding effort, finishes in the lane and has become so much more confident in his face-up game and jump shot. He was so raw when he first entered the league but not anymore. Its a true testament to his work ethic. 3. MARIO CHALMERS (Heat): Doesnt get a lot of attention on this team yet hes a feisty perimeter defender and gets the ball to the right places at the right time. Is a guy that can hurt you with the 3-point shot and loves the big moment. Perfect complimentary fit for this club. You dont need to run a lot of plays for him and the style of play is good for his game. Has a really good motor and compete level and playing with such great players has taught him to slow down and concentrate on making the smart play which he does with better consistency. 4. CHANDLER PARSONS (Rockets): Never thought hed be this good as a pro when he came out of the University of Florida. Not a big, strong guy and when you look at him, hes far from a physically imposing figure yet at an explosive/demanding position, hes more than held his own. His performance yesterday against the Spurs was one of pure efficiency and productivity with 21 points, six rebounds and six assists. He makes you guard him from deep (5- 3 Pointers) and has a neat change of pace with his ball skills. Plays the game at a controlled speed yet with superb energy and awareness. A keeper. 5. DE ANDRE JORDAN (Clippers): He gives his team the lane presence that is so important to win consistently in the NBA. Gets 13 rebounds and six blocks against the Warriors and takes only terrific high percentage shots in the lane, usually on offensive rebounds or off of Chris Paul penetration for dunks. As we get into the playoffs in April, Ill be curious to see if Doc Rivers continues to play him major minutes, particularly late in games with his shaky free-throw shooting. Rivers has made it a point of emphasis to play him and boost his stock and compliment him and its paid dividends in an improved player. With coaches leaning towards playing small and adding skill to the court in bigger games, this will be an interesting dynamic to watch develop. Custom Dallas Mavericks Jerseys . East Rutherford, NJ (SportsNetwork. Brandon Allen Jersey .com) - The New York Giants have placed offensive linemen Geoff Schwartz and Adam Snyder, defensive linemen Mathias Kiwanuka and Robert Ayers, and linebacker Terrell Manning on injured reserve, ending their seasons. Schwartz, in his first year with the Giants, played in just two games. He missed their first 10 games with a toe injury suffered in a preseason game, and he injured his ankle early in Sundays loss to Jacksonville. Snyder was also in his first season in New York. The veteran lineman played in four games in 2014, including a Week 12 start against Dallas when he sustained his knee injury. Kiwanuka was dealing with a nagging knee injury. He missed Sundays game against the Jaguars. Ayers suffered a torn pectoral muscle against Jacksonville. In his first year with the Giants, he was tied for the team lead in sacks with five. Manning played in just one game for the Giants but did participate in three earlier this year with the Chicago Bears. He hurt his ankle against Jacksonville. The Giants have now placed 20 players on injured reserve. To fill the vacated roster spots, New York signed veteran running back Chris Ogbonnaya and promoted three players from its practice squad. NFL rules prohibit the Giants from filling Mannings spot on the roster for three weeks. Their three promotions from the practice squad are offensive lineman Eric Herman, defensive lineman Dominique Hamilton and linebacker James Davidson. General manager Jerry Reese said Thursday that Mannings left ankle surgery will keep him "out of spring ball." "We will not rush him back," Reese said. "We want him for the summer -- thats most important to us." Reese also expects Manning to bounce back from a poor season in which he led the NFL with 27 interceptions. "Eli is a smart guy. I think hes driven to prove last year was just an odd year for him," Reese added. Mannings primary backup last year, Curtis Painter, recently underwent arthroscopic surgery on his right knee and is out for about a month. He could be back for the teams minicamp in June. Reese expects heavy competition for the backup quarterback job among Painter, last years draft pick Ryan Nassib, and Josh Freeman, signed in April as a free agent. Nassib did not throw a pass iin his rookie season after the Giants selected him in the fourth round. Aaron Colvin Jersey. "Well take a real good look at him," Reese said. "He didnt have the chance to play. Hell get a lot of work this spring." Reese was far less steadfast on third-year running back David Wilson, who comes off neck surgery. The Giants signed free agent Rashad Jennings away from Oakland, and the veteran entering his sixth NFL season could be the starter. "David Wilson is really kind of a bonus for us if we can get him back," Reese said. "Hes on schedule to be back." New York also picked up the fifth-year contract option on cornerback Prince Amukamara, the teams top selection in 2011. That move needed to be made by Saturday. Amukamara has been inconsistent as a pro and plagued by injuries. The Giants brought in cornerbacks Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie and Walter Thurmond as free agents. Bonny Kate is likely to bid for compensation at the Punchestown Festival after being pulled up in the BoyleSports Irish Grand National. Muhammad Wilkerson Jersey . Tune into the game live on TSN Jets and TSN Radio 1290 Winnipeg at 6:30pm ct.Paul Maurices club is in the midst of a five-game slide, and although the Jets have managed to earn three points during the skid theyll need to start rattling off some wins to make the playoffs. Winnipeg is five points out of a playoff spot in the West with 15 games left on its schedule. The Jets havent made the postseason since relocating from Atlanta to Winnipeg prior to the 2011-12 campaign. The former Thrashers, meanwhile, only made the playoffs once during 11 frustrating seasons in Atlanta. The Jets fell to 0-3-2 on their current funk after Wednesdays 3-2 shootout loss against visiting Vancouver. Chris Higgins scored the game winner in the third round of the shootout, as the Canucks halted a seven-game road skid to down Winnipeg in the opener of a three-game homestand. Winnipeg held leads of 1-0 and 2-1 in the game, but couldnt close out the win in regulation. Then, after the first five shooters came up empty, Higgins charged in down the middle and made a number of quick dekes before stuffing a forehand past Ondrej Pavelecs outstretched right pad for the victory. Andrew Ladd and Michael Frolik each lit the lamp for Winnipeg, while Pavelec posted 31 saves in the setback. "Its a loss because of the shootout," Maurice said. "Its a 2-2 game in terms of how it was played and I think thats a pretty accurate assessment of how the game went." The Jets went 7-2-0 in the first nine games under Maurice, who replaced a fired Claude Noel in January. Winnipeg, however, is just 4-3-4 under Maurice since the coachs early success. New York has lost two straight to begin a three-game road trip and Alain Vigneaults club is just 2-4-1 in March. With 74 points, the Rangers are tied with Columbus for second place in the Metropolitan Division. but they are only one ahead of Philadelphia, which currently holds the last playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. After losing 3-1 at Carolina on Tuesday, the Blueshirts dropped a 2-1 decision Thursday night at Minnesota. Zach Parises goal 1:03 into the third period provided the difference in the Wilds 2-1 victory at XCel Energy Center. Cam Talbot turned aside 24 shots in the loss, with Derek Stepan recording the lone New York goal. "Were not scoring a lot of goals 5-on-5," said Vigneault. "I thought our effort was better tonight, our execution was a little bit better, but we need to finish more and obviously that wasnt the case tonight." Martin St. Louis is one of the many Rangers struggling to find the net at the moment. St. Louis has no goals and one assist in five games since coming to New York in the blockbuster trade that sent former Rangers captain Ryan Callahan to Tampa Bay. St. Louis has excellent career numbers against the Atlanta/Winnipeg franchise, posting 27 goals and 55 assists over 74 career games. Despite dropping the first two tilts on its current trek, New York still has a solid 19-13-0 road record this season. The Blueshirts will return home to host San Jose on Sunday, but then will head back out on another three-game swing. At Tuesdays pre-match press conference, Toronto FC Head Coach Ryan Nelsen attempted to explain to the English media the difficulty of having to play a mid-season friendly against Tottenham Hotspur at this particular time of the year. Trea Turner Jersey . “It would be like us playing a game in the Christmas period when youre third in the league and youve got Man City to play on Saturday,” he said. The timing couldnt be much worse. The Champions – Sporting Kansas City - are due in town on Saturday, as Nelsens team moves through its busiest month of the MLS season with seven league games during the month of July. Hes already without some of his key players through injury, including captain Steven Caldwell and starting right back Mark Bloom. But whatever problems are posed by playing the extra game, I agree with Michael Bradleys assessment of the situation. International friendlies are of benefit to Major League Soccer and the growth of the game in North America. While they are certainly far from ideal, they are here to stay, and they have an important role to play. For a start, Wednesdays game against Tottenham is about much more than welcoming international opposition. This match is part of a four-year marketing and commercial deal struck between the two clubs as part of Jermain Defoes transfer. For both Toronto FC and Spurs, its about the bigger picture. Soccer is a global game, and a big part of achieving success is about building and managing relationships, not just within your own league, but around the world. As Toronto FC – and MLS as a whole – aims to continue its rapid growth, international friendlies are an important piece of the puzzle as they provide an opportunity to get a wider circle of attention both in the local community, across North America, and in other countries as well. From a playing perspective it can also have a positive impact. Its a chance for some of the squad players to get a competitive game, and for some of the clubs youngsters to test themselves against a standard of opposition they wouldnt usually face. In 2010 when Toronto FC played Bolton Wanderers at BMO Field, the Man of the Match was a young teenager who hadnt even signed a professional contract at that stage. Doneil Henry has gone on to become a first team regular with the club who has aspirations of playing in Europe. That Bolton match was an early stepping stone for the Canadian international. As he sat alongside Spurs star Christian Eriksen and manager Mauricio Pochettino at BMO Field on Tuesday, Henry said: “This is where I want to be and where I want to play one day. I just want to learn and show what I can do.” So this match is another opportunity for him to prove himself. We likely wont see much of Torontos leading players against Spurs. Ryan Nelsen needs to be cautious, and rightly so. He will give some of his starters 45 minutes, and rest others completely. But for a number of men within his squad this game will provide a chance to shine and it will be interesting to see if they can take it. Tottenham arrived in Toronto on Monday direct from Seattle where they tied the Sounders 3-3 in an entertaining game in the first game of their three-match North American tour. They are without their World Cup players who have been given extra time to rest, and last years leading scorer Emmanuel Adebayor who is recovering in London following a mild bout of malaria. But young Danish star Christian Eriksen is expected to see his first action of preseason as Spurs continue to prepare for the Premier Leagues opening weekend in mid-August. Last year Spurs finished sixth in the English top flight, but are under new management with a new direction after Mauricio Pochettinos arrival from Southampton. Eriksen was pretty blunt when asked what Tottenham will need to improve upon this season, with consistency the theme. “We had some really good games and some really bad games,” he said. “For us its about being more stable and also getting points against the big teams.” Watch Toronto FC vs. Tottenham Hotspur live tonight on TSN at 7pm et/4pm pt. Stenson currently holds a 252,164 points advantage over nearest challenger Danny Willett, who struggled to a tied-68th in Turkey last week, with 2015 order of merit champion Rory McIlroy in third spot.Victory in Sun City would guarantee Stenson his first Race to Dubai title since 2013, the same year the Swede also topped the PGA Tours money listings, providing Willett finishes the week outside of the top 10. Stenson won the 2013 DP World Tour Championship to end the year as European No 1 Sixth place or better for the Olympic silver medalist is enough to end Rory McIlroys hopes of finishing the season top of the standings for a third year running, as the Northern Irishman already trails by more than a million points and doesnt feature this week.Willett led the Race to Dubai for the majority of the season until a recent dip in results, but the Masters champion remains the only player able to move above Stenson in the standings in South Africa. McIlroy is the only player inside the current top 10 on the Race to Dubai not featuring in South Africa. A win at the Gary Player Country Club - the venue where Willett won the opening event of last season - would leapfrog the Open champion back in to top spot, while a top-five finish could be enough depending on Stensons performance. The current top 10 in the standings all have a mathematical chancee of ending the season top of the rankings, although those outside of the top two would need a series of scenarios to go in their favour to claim the Harry Vardon Trophy.
